![]() ![]() Days later, I bought and began to read Salter’s famous novel A Sport and a Pastime, which begins, “September. Not too long after I’d been released from prison, the place where I wrote the first few words of what I envisioned then as a fictionalized version of my life story, I happened upon a profile of James Salter in my local newspaper. The first name I gave it was Luminous Days (there’s even a tattoo on my forearm to honor it). That being said, my novel has seen a few name changes. Names have made me think about the pressing thing or things I want to say, and have helped me consider my reader: What do they need from the language, the characters, the story? Names have always helped my ideas cohere (or at least transform from inchoate to an emerging form). Here’s a confession: It’s tough, close to no-way-no-how, for me to write something without first giving it a name. ![]()

With no explanation, Lainey starts to search for answers with her best friend Maggie and a cute street fighter, and ends up unveiling a hoard of secrets about her heritage & past. Except, her life suddenly takes a strange turn and she starts to hallucinate visions of a girl named Josephine. So basically we have Lainey, a quirky, small-town girl who's goal is literally just to pass her exams. This was a fun book - and wow that last 30% was a wild ride! Alternatively go slow and allow yourself to process and understand every beat. Reading comes in revisions and drafts, too: gradual approaches that recursively construct a model of the text. (Maybe try to actively evaluate what “level” the material is - are you completely lost, or is it just a little elusive or is it “just challenging enough” etc.) ![]() ![]() You can make a note to look something up later of course, but especially on a first pass and first encounter with a work that might be or seem challenging, maybe just focus on the broad structure of the work, trying to understand as much as possible very quickly. Human culture belongs to everyone, and you don’t need to understand every reference to get most of the value out of a work. ![]() I would really suggest that in general don’t be worried about not being ready for a work, especially one as important and broadly relevant as The Myth of Sisyphus. It’s one of the great works of literature as well as philosophy, a cultural monument and apex and touchstone in its own right and it is as open to you as it is for anyone for an immediate encounter. Try reading it and see! The people of Crum who know the book tend to love it or hate it. ![]() Lee Maynard's 1988 semi-autobiographical novel Crum is set in the small, poor West Virginia town where he grew up. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book is about the conflict between cultural norms of love from Lan’s point of view before and after she emigrates with her affluent family to the USA. The plot involves African traditions, shock of emigrating from Kenya to the USA, adjusting to differences, whether or not still to abide by the rules of a former life in Africa. She’s, a teenage African girl named Lanakenua Tanei who, for brevity’s sake let’s call “Lan.” It may also be a metaphor for the main character’s beauty and strength. Concrete Rose, the title, is the name of the main character’s family business, which crafts beautiful items from concrete, a strong and durable material. ![]() |
